Hello! I'm Andrew Davis, a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of California. I specialize in working with those who have experienced trauma, people dealing with issues relating to codependency, and people who have yet to have positive and meaningful experiences in therapy.
My approach
My therapeutic style is eclectic, compassionate, and client-oriented. My strengths lie in finding the balance between being a compassionate listener while also being direct when appropriate. I strive to help clients find coping skills that work for them and their individual experiences while also dedicating time to explore deeper root issues. I make sure to be intentional with what our work together looks like, creating a treatment approach that is unique to you and your needs.
My focus
I enjoy working with those who have a history of trauma and have found success in working with those who have yet to have meaningful therapy experiences with their past therapists. I value creativity and individual uniqueness. I believe that everyone is shaped by their environment (people, places, interactions, associations, and experiences) and that one's culture plays a significant role in the beliefs we have about ourselves and the world around us. I'm an ally of the LGBTQ community and have experience working with diverse populations when it comes to race, sexual identity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and religious background.
My communication style
I strive to create a warm, supportive, and open space where clients feel safe to explore. Depending on the need of the client (or session) I will sometimes be a more passive listener, helping to validate your experience. At other times, I will play a more direct and active role in our sessions. My overarching intent is to provide interventions and interactions that are in line with your goals.
My journey to mental healthcare
Like many therapists, my own life experiences and healing journey have led me to where I am today. Backed by both my academic and life experiences, I enjoy supporting clients on their journey toward wellness, acting as a facilitator or guide.
My goals for you
In our first session, we will collaboratively create treatment goals specific to you and what you're seeking. It's important to me that you're involved in this process so the goals are true to you, not what someone else thinks you should work on. In our work together, we'll periodically check in to see how we feel about the progress being made and if necessary, make adjustments to the goals.
My first session with you
In our first session, I'll introduce myself and address any questions or concerns you have. After our introduction, we'll spend the majority of the initial session completing a thorough intake, which involves asking questions that help me get to know you and how your life experiences have impacted you. I always make sure to be sensitive about certain topics that can be difficult to talk about with someone new. Part of this includes respecting your choice to come back to certain questions another time if you so choose.
