Hello there! I'm Sonia Becerra, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 7 years of clinical experience. I have worked with children, teens, adults, and families. I have spent the last 4 years working in a community mental health agency dedicated to adults who are dual-diagnosed (i.e. mental health and substance abuse disorders). I have also worked in a California State Prison as a Substance Abuse Treatment Provider.
My approach
I am a naturally curious, authentic, and adaptable person. I value authenticity and showing up as a human first rather than an "expert". You should expect my style to be warm, non-judgmental, and accepting. I am here to provide a safe space that will facilitate vulnerability and growth.
My focus
I have provided individual, family, and group sessions utilizing the following evidence-based models: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Integrated Therapy for Bipolar Disorder and Substance Abuse, Motivational Interviewing, and PIER Model.
My communication style
In being true to my personality, you can expect me to be direct, humorous, empathetic, and easygoing. At times, I cuss. Because let's face it, sometimes situations/life just sucks! I am open to your feedback. If something is helpful to you, please let me know. If something isn't helpful to you, don't hesitate to let me know!
My journey to therapy
I'd like to think I was purposeful when I set out to be a therapist, but I wasn't. I initially wanted to be a Special Education Teacher for children who are hearing impaired and entering the public school system. When I volunteered for ONE summer session, I quickly learned that it was rewarding, but it was also incredibly disheartening. I then changed my major and started pursuing a career in nursing. It was in one of the general education classes that a psychology teacher taught me about the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator test. The results of this test were mind-blowing and, as it turns out, incredibly accurate (I would have made a not-so-great nurse). Instead, it guided me into a career I absolutely love.
My goals for you
I have the mindset that therapy is not a "one size fits all" experience and believe that it takes a tremendous amount of courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life. Therefore, as you take the first steps toward change, you can expect me to get into the trenches and dig with you. Our work together is based on your needs, goals, and pace. I am here to support and empower you.
My first session with you
During our first session, you can expect me to ask a lot of questions. I want to get to know you and where you find yourself at this time in your life. You can also expect to learn a little bit about me. I believe one of the most important aspects of our time together is the ability for us to build a therapeutic alliance and this starts from our first session!
