Hi there, I'm Kim!

Hello, I am Kim Coshnear, a dedicated Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in California. My mission is to cultivate a nurturing and accepting environment, empowering clients to embrace self-acceptance and pursue transformative changes that enrich their lives.

My approach

My academic journey in Psychodynamic theory, enriched by a multicultural lens, forms the cornerstone of my therapeutic approach. I believe in the power of understanding and reshaping our earliest relational patterns through heightened awareness and informed choices. My practice thoughtfully integrates considerations of race, class, and social justice. I am passionate about Jungian dream analysis and Schwartz's Internal Family Systems. Additionally, I find the structured approach of Linehan's Dialectical Behavioral Therapy invaluable, especially its components like Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness skills, in navigating our increasingly anxious world.

My focus

In my practice, I specialize in assisting individuals grappling with depression, anxiety, and addiction, and navigating complex questions about relationships, personal identity, and life's purpose.

My communication style

I see myself as being warm and approachable, creating a secure space for clients to deepen their self-understanding. My aim is for every client to leave a session feeling more equipped to tackle life's challenges than when they arrived. Open communication and ensuring my clients feel heard and understood are fundamental to my approach.

My journey to mental healthcare

My career began in teaching, but I was naturally drawn towards more individualized work. This led me to a fulfilling journey in therapy, where I am passionate about guiding individuals through their internal landscapes and toward personal growth.

My goals for you

I approach goal setting collaboratively.

My first session with you

In our initial session, I provide a comprehensive introduction to our therapeutic process, establishing session logistics, and collaboratively identifying areas of focus such as mood, career, relationships, and related goals. We will also complete a history and assessment
