Hi Everyone, my name is Imelda Avila, and I'm a licensed clinical social worker. I am truly passionate about helping individuals during a difficult period in life. I believe everyone deserves a safe environment to begin healing.
My approach
My approach is strength-based. I believe in meeting the client where they're at. I want to be intentional in listening to understand their values, needs, desires, and even their trauma responses. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-focused brief therapy, as both will help me identify treatment goals that have positive results whether it's a short or long-term relationship.
My focus
I have experience working with a variety of age groups, socioeconomic backgrounds, experiences, and diversity. I have worked with individuals during the hardest time of their life; dealing with end-of-life, new medical diagnosis, depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, crisis intervention, grief/loss, and family dynamics. In doing this, my priority is genuinely engaged in the therapeutic relationship, having unconditional positive regard for my client, feeling empathy, and having clear communication.
My communication style
I am a very personable and attentive listener. I want you to feel safe in sharing without judgment. I want to help you through your experiences in life that have interfered with daily living.
My journey to therapy
I have been a social worker for nearly 20 years. It started with going through my own life struggles and trauma as an adolescent. Not knowing or understanding how to deal with my own struggles growing up; I learned later in life there was help in understanding mental health and healing. It's not just about helping others, this is bigger in actually having the heart to make a difference one life at a time. Most recently I have witnessed a shortage in mental health services for many people who are dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, grief and loss after the pandemic. I want to help you through your journey in healing and utilizing tools that will help you cope in this world. Just remember you are not alone through this walk.
My goals for you
I want to build a trusting relationship with my client. I'm here to be clear about what you are aiming for. I would like to set goals that you can measure considering they are achievable, realistic, and time-related.
My first session with you
During our first session, I'd like to get to know you. I want you to know this is your time and space to be able to talk about what brought you to therapy. I would like to learn and better understand what you are feeling. Making a connection will allow me to assist with creating a plan to help you reach your goals.
