Hello! My name is Sonya Adams, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). My focus areas include; trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I believe you are the expert on your experiences, and I look forward to helping you reach your goals!
My approach
My therapeutic approach is what I describe as eclectic interpersonal. I believe that therapeutic work cannot begin until trust is established between client and therapist. I use motivational interviewing to develop our working relationship and to build a plan to meet your goals. I will work with you to decide which approach will suit your needs. Therapy should be personalized to meet your unique needs.
My focus
I enjoy helping clients develop their goals for therapy and then meet those goals. I have previously worked with high-acuity clients; many of these clients were challenged with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or Suicidal thoughts (ideation). I am most comfortable treating clients challenged by anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and PTSD.
My communication style
I believe we thrive in a calm, peaceful environment. Therefore, I work to create an environment that is calm and peaceful for each client. One way I create a feeling of calm is by using guided imagery to take an anxious clients to their 'calm, peaceful space.' This may be on their favorite beach, sitting in the sand with water lapping on the shore, or in the mountains, sitting on a rock by a stream.
My journey to therapy
As a pre-teen, I struggled with anxiety and anger after my parents divorced. I was connected to an amazing therapist who made a positive impression on my life. He helped me navigate through the anger I felt without judgment. He helped me learn healthy ways to express my feelings. And he blessed me with the knowledge that I have continued to build upon in my journey as a therapist. I believe that we each have a purpose on this earth, and our journey is as unique as we are individuals.
My goals for you
During our session, I will take notes of key points or goals. I will return back to these points to collaborate with the client. The client is in charge of setting their goals. As the therapist, I am there for support and guidance.
My first session with you
I focus on laying the foundation to build a strong therapeutic relationship. It is important to develop trust and mutual respect during the first few sessions. I use motivational interviewing to begin our session and to gather important information for goal setting. If there is an area of concern, for example, feeling anxious about an upcoming event, we will work to develop a positive coping skill to support you through this event.
