Hi there, I'm Thomas!

Hello, my name is Tom Putnam and I'm a licensed professional counselor (LPC). I have been licensed as a professional counselor for over 10 years and have a passion for helping others to make positive change in their lives and to overcome challenges and barriers. As a counselor, I help to empower my clients to gain insight into their emotional challenges, develop practical coping skills, and foster a greater sense of self-awareness and resilience.

My approach

One of the theoretical approaches that I find to be useful for clients is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This theory is grounded in the belief that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected and that by addressing and reshaping negative thought patterns and behaviors, we can achieve positive emotional and behavioral change. I also use other approaches, such as Humanistic theory which is rooted in the belief of the inherent worth and potential for growth within each individual. I provide a non-judgmental and empathetic space where clients can explore their feelings, experiences, and personal values freely.

My focus

My client-focus is on cultivating a strong therapeutic relationship characterized by trust, comfort, and security. I believe that the foundation of effective counseling lies in creating a safe and supportive space where clients can openly share their thoughts, feelings, and concerns without fear of judgment. I have effective experience in working with individuals who have experienced depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction issues, divorce, and many other challenges.

My communication style

By actively listening, empathizing, and providing targeted and constructive dialogue, I focus on creating an atmosphere where clients feel understood and respected. This sense of safety and trust serves as the bedrock upon which clients can explore their inner world, confront challenges, and embark on a path of self-discovery and healing. Ultimately, my communication style and focus is on ensuring that clients feel valued, heard, and empowered throughout their therapeutic journey.

My journey to mental healthcare

I have always had a desire to help and serve others who may be struggling or are in need of support in order to overcome their own personal challenges and problems. My drive to do this work comes from personal fulfillment and satisfaction in knowing that I'm engaged in work that is helping others to make effective and constructive change in their lives.

My goals for you

I prioritize a collaborative and client-centered process of goal setting. I believe that setting clear and meaningful goals is crucial for clients to work toward positive change and personal growth. To achieve this, I engage in open and honest dialogue with clients to help them identify their aspirations, values, and areas of concern. Together, we establish specific and realistic goals that align with their individual needs and desires.

My first session with you

During the initial session in therapy, clients can expect a warm and welcoming environment designed to establish a foundation of trust and collaboration. This first meeting serves as an opportunity for us to get to know each other better, and I will explain the therapeutic process and confidentiality guidelines. I will encourage you to share your reasons for seeking counseling, your goals, and any concerns you may have. This session is also a chance for you to ask questions, express any doubts or fears you may have about therapy, and set your own expectations for our work together.
