My name is Xavier Walker, I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of New York. I work with clients statewide who seek therapy for various issues. I work with adults and specialize in anxiety, stress, interpersonal relationships, and depression, using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy to help my clients make progress and start feeling better.
My approach
My approach to therapy varies based on the needs of each client I work with. I most frequently use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy, as both modalities help me and the client build a shared understanding of their reality, and allow us to work together to forge a path forward. My goal is to build a strong relationship with my clients through the use of various therapeutic approaches. Our journey together will be a partnership in which we work together to accomplish your therapy goals to become your best possible self.
My focus
I have found that my style and approach are a good fit for adult clients aged 18-70 who may be dealing with challenges in their relationships and emotional distress. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, trauma, grief, self-doubt, overthinking, issues in interpersonal relationships, family issues, anger management, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, finding your life's purpose and meaning, and depression. I work to help my clients navigate these challenges and build skills to allow them to feel better about themselves and develop a more positive outlook on life.
My communication style
My communication style is calm, accommodating, and personable. Therefore, I use the best tone to form a working alliance with clients. This would be a calming and accepting environment that is free and safe from judgment. I strive to create casual and safe sessions to address both deep-rooted issues and surface-level concerns. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything that may be bothering them.
My journey to mental healthcare
I decided to become a therapist because I have always wanted to help people. As a young child, I had a lot of relatives who had to manage various mental health issues and concerns. As a teenager, I always enjoyed talking to my friends about their problems. I have always naturally been drawn to helping people through difficult times. Therefore, I decided to take this route because it is the perfect blend of my past experiences and things that I enjoy. Therapy to me is very rewarding as I enjoy seeing individuals become the best versions of themselves as they navigate through life's difficulties.
My goals for you
When setting goals with clients I take the role of a partner. This often starts by building trust between us and getting comfortable with what it means to be in therapy. We work together to explore what your goals are and plan/develop the necessary steps to reach those goals. You are the expert of your own lived experience. I am just here to help support you on your journey. Over time, we'll work together to set goals and track your progress.
My first session with you
What you can expect from our first session together is for us to spend the majority of our time talking about how you've been and why you are seeking therapy. This is to help me get a better understanding of how we can work together to meet your needs. The first session is about us building an initial connection and helping me get a sense of where we should go from there. During our first session, you can expect a casual interaction in order to become more comfortable. You can feel free to ask me some questions in order to become familiar with who I am and make your experience as smooth as possible.
