My name is Jennifer Matthews and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I take an eclectic approach to therapy, utilizing my vast knowledge of theory to provide quality care to each of my clients on an individual basis. I am trained and certified in CBT, DBT, ACT, CPT, and PE.
I don't believe that therapy follows a pattern or a curriculum. It is a unique journey for each individual that I have the honor of guiding. While the techniques I utilize are evidence-based, they are tailored to the needs and presentation of the client after careful assessment and input from the client.
I have spent most of my career assisting individuals to gain power and freedom back over their lives. There is nothing more rewarding than the client who can smile during and after the storm knowing they have created the skills necessary to not only survive but thrive. Most clients that request to work with me have a trauma history, experience racial injustice, struggle with co-dependency, have sexual identity concerns, and are looking for ways to combat negative patterns of thinking.
My communication style
I create a safe, supportive environment for my clients. Our therapeutic relationship will be full of give and take, push and pull. Some days you will feel like quitting therapy and those are the days you know change is happening. I learn quickly when to push and when to back off. I promise to always respect where you are at and challenge you just enough for you to end the session feeling that you accomplished your goal for that day.
My journey to mental healthcare
Mental health strikes the majority of people in the world. It is a universal language, and my family is not exempt. Having a loved one growing up, and not understanding her condition, brought me to this field. Seeing the impact of trauma on individuals and the impact that my treatment can provide, is what kept me in the field.
My goals for you
Goal setting is not cookie-cutter. You are not a number at a deli. Your goals are YOUR goals, not mine. We will work collaboratively to establish realistic goals to set you up for success and to help build your confidence in the healing journey.
My first session with you
The first session is about comfort and relatability. Knowing who you are is crucial in establishing the therapeutic alliance and providing you with the quality care you deserve. A comprehensive history is a good start in providing me a window into how you became who you are today.
