I have worked in mental health and medical social work for 20 years. I believe that it is important to hear a person's story and understand what their goals are before beginning any treatment. I enjoy working with people of all ages, and I'd like to hear from you.
My approach
I use many approaches to assisting my clients, including CBT, tapping, and motivational interviewing, and I always have a strength-based and trauma-informed mindset.
My focus
Many of my clients have told me that I am easy to talk to, that they don't feel judged, that I am good at listening and summarizing what they are telling me and that they want to come to sessions with me. They have also expressed that they are often surprised that they have made strides and begun to do things a little differently without even realizing they have made changes. It is all about meeting you where you are and empowering you to do something that you want to do, not the things others tell us you should be doing.
My communication style
My communication during therapy will be truthful and real. My tone and demeanor will fit what you need. Some people need soft and gentle, some people need to get straight to the point, and I can provide whatever it is that helps you most. My listening style is open and engaged. I like to summarise what I am hearing to ensure I understand things as my client needs me to understand.
My journey to therapy
I became a Social Worker because I find it easy to listen to people. I found that I am good at empathy and problem-solving. What I learned over time was how to help people think and talk about the things they want to be different and what they have the power and control of so they can make changes in their own life that is good for them. Recently, I added tapping to my skills. This has been very helpful with trauma issues for my clients and seems to help some people that have been "stuck" in a no-change place for a long time.
My goals for you
I do not have your goals for you. We will talk about why you came to counseling and what you hope to achieve while meeting with me. You will tell me what we are going to work on, and if that needs to change, we can make that happen, too.
My first session with you
In our first session, I like to hear why you are coming to see me, what you are hoping to achieve, how often you would like to meet, and a background on who you are as a person. I do have the required documentation, so a few questions that may seem unrelated may have to be addressed, but the time is all for you.
