Hello, my name is Jamie Portillo and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I practice therapy using a client-centered and eclectic approach incorporating skills from different therapy interventions depending on what each client needs.
My approach
I truly believe in meeting my clients where they’re at mentally/emotionally and not rushing the therapy/recovery process. I typically use a wide variety of interventions stemming from motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
My focus
I’ve worked with clients from many different backgrounds and with a variety of issues, but specialize in treating depression, anxiety, and trauma in adults.
My communication style
I consider myself first and foremost a client-centered therapist who focuses on what each specific client needs and I mold my skills based on each client’s needs. I am very honest and straightforward with my clients, but at the same time, I am tactful and empathetic. I tend to build rapport with my clients quickly and many of my clients have mentioned they feel comfortable with me from the first session due to my tone of voice and non-judgmental approach.
My journey to mental healthcare
I’ve always been a giver and a helper, and I was drawn to social work because of that, and specifically to the field of mental health because I’ve struggled with mental health issues in the past and I believe that anyone can benefit from therapy.
My goals for you
When setting goals with clients, I start with meeting the client where they’re at in terms of how ready and motivated they are to work on specific goals. I collaborate with my clients to help them set goals based on their readiness to change.
My first session with you
I will introduce myself, start getting to know the client as best as I can and discuss expectations for future sessions.
