My name is Kimberly "Kim" Gary. I am licensed in both Virginia and North Carolina. I believe people come to counseling because they want something different in their lives. They may want to change their life situation, solve a particular problem, make a decision, or understand what is happening in their lives or within themselves. The first step in counseling is to explore your feelings and concerns and the changes you want to make.
My approach
My treatment modality is based on cognitive behavioral and wellness models of mental health, discussing how thoughts, feelings, and actions relate as well as taking into consideration the developmental stage of the individual, focusing on prevention and early intervention and seeking to empower the individual to resolve their own problems.
My focus
I typically work with adults experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, and work stress.
My communication style
I strive to communicate in an environment where clients feel safe, respected, validated, and challenged. I hope that clients feel working with me helps them to gain insight, develop new skills, as well as to manage better/resolve life's challenges.
My journey to mental healthcare
I knew I wanted to be in a helping profession, and once I took my first psychology course, I was hooked. I love assisting individuals with actualizing their best selves.
My goals for you
I like to have clients identify their goals and then discuss how we can work together to achieve them.
My first session with you
Clients should expect to receive a listening ear but also be prepared to provide some historical data, as well as identify their goals for treatment.
